Sergeant of the Guard

A Poem of Peace

by Hans Schultz

To all the prisoners in this camp

I wish you all goodnight

No matter where you’re coming from

For you there’s no more fight

They cannot send you up again

In frightening bombing-raids

I’ll see to it that you are safe

And won’t be taken away

Sleep tight, my prisoners, and hush

Your Sergeant of the Guard keeps watch

So sleep in heavenly peace tonight

Sleep tight in heavenly peace

*

To our Kommandant I say

Mein Herr, you are the best

You have a lot of power, yet

When put up to the test

The people in your power do

Not suffer by your hand

You may not be the cleverest

Yet a good Kommandant

Sleep tight, my Kommandant, and hush

Your Sergeant of the Guard keeps watch

So sleep in heavenly peace tonight

Sleep tight in heavenly peace

*

A model of how life should be

Is our Stalag 13

A place where no man shoots a man

Where cruelty’s never been

A little isle of peace this is

In a threatening world at war

A haven in the wilderness

Where fighting is no more

Sleep tight, my little Stalag, hush

Your Sergeant of the Guard keeps watch

So sleep in heavenly peace tonight

Sleep tight in heavenly peace

*

To all my fellow guards I say

Let’s keep up the good work

It is our job to see to it

That peace is not disturbed

No monkey business in this camp

No men escaping in the night

It is our job to keep them here

Away from fatal fights

Stand guard, my fellow guards, stand watch!

Your Sergeant of the Guard keeps watch

To preserve this heavenly peace tonight

Preserve this heavenly peace

*

To all our soldiers in the field

I pray the end is nigh

I pray the brass will soon perceive

Our country’s agonized cry

We all need to be friends again

We need to dare to trust

Continued killing will not help

So end this war we must!

Sleep tight, my countrymen, and hush

Your Sergeant of the Guard keeps watch

So sleep in heavenly peace tonight

Sleep tight in heavenly peace

*

To all the world I’d like to say

Come to our camp and see

We’re men from many nations, yet

We live from fighting free

We live together, laugh together

Tease each other, and still

Though actually we’re enemies

Prevail does our good will

Sleep tight, poor wounded world, and hush

Your Sergeant of the Guard keeps watch

So sleep in heavenly peace tonight

Sleep tight in heavenly peace
